Next year's show will have a different venue. The Viables in Basingstoke has been chosen, particularly for free parking, signs from Basingstoke lead you to the Viables, there is also a hall providing all we should require.
There are two social opportunities coming up soon where we can get together for that chat that there never seems time for at meetings.
The first one will be our Summer!! Social at East Oakley Village Hall, on Sunday July 16th (held inside in case it rains) normal meeting times. Bring along something to eat, which can be shared by all (like Christmas). Tea and cold drinks provided. Numbered tickets for the auction plants will be sent with this newsletter or be available at the June meeting for people on the e-mail list.
It is hoped to have a small assortment of Orchid books, which may be found useful for members, and are readily available in most garden centres and bookshops. They are the personal property of committee members on loan for the
afternoon.
The second social will be the Monk Sherborne & District Horticultural Show on Saturday 29th July from 1.30pm. We have agreed to put on a display of our plants, this gives us an ideal opportunity to promote our society locally as well as showing our skills at growing exotics. We shall need members’ plants for this, also greenery, and help with staging and manning the display. We will not have to get up at the crack of dawn, staging will take place from 11.00 to12.00, plants and helpers required to be there at 11.00, no later please.
Our committee member Fery Turner is also a member of Monk Sherborne Horticultural Society and tells us that the venue, Queen’s house, Monk Sherborne, has wonderful grounds ideal for picnics; there will be refreshments available if you don’t wish to picnic. Admission, adults £1 children (under 17) and OAPs 50p.
The last two meetings have been disturbed due to problems with parked cars. Please park with care making sure you are not on the pavement or blocking a driveway. Buses go along the road and have found problems getting through.
In the greenhouse not very much is progressing due to the cold weather, shading should be in situ by now, (just in case the summer sun materialises) bugs will be starting to show themselves have your spray ready, also have slug pellets ready as the snails and slugs are very active now. Cymbidiums and Dendrobiums could be out in the garden by now. New shoots also should be starting to grow on several plants so take care if repotting.

It would be nice if we could have volunteers each month for setting up and returning the hall back as found, also the tea making needs volunteers, an incentive will be free tea or coffee!!

Sunday July 16th Summer social at East Oakley Village Hall (similar to the Christmas party) bring along a plate of nibbles to share.
