North Hampshire Orchid Society Newsletter
Keeping members up to date with what is and has been happening within our Society
November 2006
Since the last newsletter the Society has displayed at two orchid events - Dinton
Pastures and Wraysbury. Dinton Pastures was a success both for the Traders,
and for our society, as we gained several new members from visitors having
picked up our leaflets.
Three important events are coming up soon:
- Our Christmas social.
- The AGM
- Our Annual Show
The Christmas Social
The Christmas Social is on Sunday December 17th, a chance to chat to members
without having to stop for a speaker.
Please bring along some festive edibles and a raffle prize wrapped in Christmas paper. There will also be a table for judging plants as usual, so don’t forget to bring along any plant you think worthy of judging, or for the show table.
The AGM
The AGM on Sunday January 21st, a chance to be a part of the decision making
within the Society, perhaps filling a vacant seat on the committee? There will
be an official notification sent out by the Hon Secretary in due course.
Following completion of the AGM and presentation of the Annual Awards there will be a mini auction of members plants, so don’t forget to bring along any plants you wish to find a new home for.
The Annual Show
The Annual Show is on Saturday February 17th, at a new venue - The Barn at the
Viables, Harrow Way, Basingstoke. We will have similar format as in previous
years. Ratcliffe Orchids, Plested Orchids, Laurence Hobbs Orchids, Just in Glass and Plants Plus stockists of orchid sundries, have all accepted our invitation to trade at our show, we are still awaiting replies from other invited Orchid Societies, so far we have received an acceptance from Thames Valley Orchid Society. If you want any specific plants or sundries from the above traders, do get in touch with, them they will be happy to bring special orders along to the show for collection.
With regard to the show please keep your eyes open for any suitable gifts to
donate for the tombola table, there are plenty of bargains in the shops before
and after Christmas. The tombola table has proved to be a popular and profitable item in our show.
As ever we will need as many helpers for various tasks throughout the day from
8.00am until finish of show, a form has been prepared and will be circulated at
the December and January meetings, for members to indicate their willingness and availability for required tasks during the day.
2007 programme
Shortly the 2007 programme will be available, please note that the March meeting date will be a week earlier on Sunday March 11th.
The reason for this being that The RHS London Orchid Show is on the 17 – 18 March which clashes with our normal meeting date, it will give members more chance to attend this prestigious event.
RHS Wisley
RHS Wisley will be holding their Special Event – Orchid Weekend on 13 – 14th January. A display of orchids by McBeans in the plant centre, plus demonstrations by Jim Durrant on both days at 11am, 1pm and 2pm.
Also on Monday 15th January Jim Durrant and Janet Plested will be holding a short one day course – Focus on orchids designed to assist beginners and keen growers. At a cost of RHS members £48 and non-members £58 this includes lunch and refreshments.
and finally...
I hope you have rescued all your orchids from the garden and have tucked them in for the winter.
There will be leaflets for members advertising our Orchid Show for circulating in shops and prominent places, at the Christmas and AGM meetings.
I hope to see you all at the Christmas Social and the AGM.
